Terrible waterlogging in our new garden so today I dug a hole in the grass to get a look. I found this, is it a leech? Is it a flatworm? It has a sucker. Should I be concerned?
    Any advise greatly appreciated.

@Scrungee arrghhh, I guess there will be more than one.
Now I'm also worried about the source of the waterlogging.

I had them up to 300mm long outside my garage in the wet weather of 2012, much bigger and scarier than my daughter saw in the rainforests of Borneo.

Oh no, I don't like the look of that at all. I'm a bit freaked out by the whole thing.
Did you dispatch them @Scrungee or did they just somehow go away?

I just leave them alone to get on with their lives, my daughter tells me that if one manages to attach itself to you whilst in a tropical rainforest the preferred method was a squirt of anti-insecticide spray which would make it shrivel up and detach from the skin.

I'm not sure that I'll be able to happily coexist with leeches. :(

I've come across these in my garden pond, sometimes find them in the filter, and attached to me, but usually they are very small.

So, I have dug a trench through the grass. The top 4" is soaking wet but dry below that level. Looks like severe compaction is preventing drainage. Plan of action is to dig over the grass, improve the soil and establish a new lawn. Hopefully it will then be too dry for leeches.

Looking at your photo I now know I found two last summer in a plastic water bowl. I didn't think about them being leeches!! They stuck to the side and didn't want to move!! I don't think I'll sleep tonight @Everhopeful :yikes:
