Is the Israeli onslaught in any way justified?

To me the Israel response is grossly disproportionate and almost equal to the actions of the Serbs in the early 1990s yet the west and US will barely condem it.

Alas Israel seems to not want peace until they've wiped out the Palestinian population.

I've also heard on the news that reporters are not allowed into Gaza, if that was us there would be all sorts of condemnation.
Israel has a lot to answer for when it comes to stirring trouble up in the Middle East, but then I suppose we have as well.

There are far too many Jews in western countries in high places to ever get Israel dragged over the coals by the west, I feel.

It`s only a matter of time before Iran, Syria, Jordan and Libya, step in.

I`ve tried to answer this twice now but every time I think I have formed an opinion I realise it`s just too big of an onion for the likes of me to peel away at.

I share your prediction David, and dread it-there will be all out war in the Middle East soon, I only hope Gordon Brown knows that this time whatever America does, she does it alone.

In my opinion. Bush and Blair should NEVER have invaded Iraq, and both should go before the war crimes tribunal. Bush just wanted to upstage his, wiser, father. If we are going to fight the war on terrorism, why haven`t we invaded Zimbabwe?

It wont be all out war in the middle east, it never is.

They have other things on their mind, as long as Israel just keeps pounding the little man, the others wont get involved.
If they do the US will get involved, if only supply wise.

Seem to remenber a map at school, sure Israel was called Palestine then.

Israel didn`t exist until 1948, when we helped the jews take over Palestine, which was a British Protecterate.

It was Pete- ( and here is where my lack of knowledge comes I think) unlike with Jordan, Israel never came to any formal arrangements with other countries over it`s borders. Didn`t they annex illegally an area and never come to an agreement. I think thats why no embassy is there or something like that isn`t it? That ( and please inform me if I am incorrect-as I say quite ignorant) is what the fighting is about-an illegal occupation.

Lolli, not sure either, but Israel seems to have the opinion that they can just take land and settle there, and sod the arabs.

I think if I was an arab, I'd be out there chucking stones at every opportunity.

Hmm! What would we do if the French kept firing missiles at us?

As regards disproportionate force. Well. the Georgians found out all about
this! It works the same with nations as it does with individuals. If you pick on someone bigger and stronger than you don't be surprised if they don't just pat you on the head. You're going to get a hiding, that's the 3rd lesson in the university of life!!

I'm glad I started this thread, great responses.

David, I share your sentiments regards Iraq.

I feel the only time America will stick their neck out is if oil supply is threatened. I'm not sure that the likes of Syria and Libya etc have the military capability to take on Israel although the threat of action might halt Israel.
