In December last year I signed up with npower for electricity and gas supply on the promise of a cheaper rate and that it would be kept at that rate for a year. In January I get a letter from npower telling me that I have the wrong kind of meter and they were sticking me on their standard rate. I wrote back, after consulting with other energy companies, that my meter was standard issue and that I would complain to Ofgen about breach of contract. I then get a letter back saying I'm back on the cheaper rate - but no explanation or regrets.
Then I get a letter asking me to contact them before I complain to Ofgen! I rang them and was told that since they'd since they'd put me back on the contracted agreed tariff the matter was resolved, and that they hadn't changed my tariff to the higher rate because my meter was the wrong type but because of the late registration of the contract by npower! I told them I still wasn't happy because [a] the first reason was untrue and a breach of contract and the second reason was their responsibility and that was a breach of contract. The problem is, which is why I am considering referring it to Ofgen, that I'm wondering if they've done the same thing to other new customers they took in the campaign who have just accepted being given the higher tariff.
Has anyone else had this problem??

Are newly fitted meters digital now (or still the old ones with the whell spinning round)? If so would it not just need prgramming with the correct rate?

    Steve...:)

I agree with you, Steve. I think it was just a con. They'd probably filled their quota of new customers at the cheap rate and were fobbing the rest off with a "wrong kind of leaves on the rails" excuse and hoping that they would be soft enough to accept it with a shrug of the shoulders.

Without risking getting into trouble for libel, suffice to say that I don't like nPower.

A few years ago when I moved into my last house, our electricity was supplied by another company. Everything was fine for over a year. I switched to nPower because they offered a cheaper deal. Keep in mind that I'd been at the address for over a year. I switched to nPower and lo and behold, after about a month, I receive a final demand for well over £1000. I phoned them and asked how they figured I'd used that amount of electricity in just a month, the reply came that it was an outstanding bill from my address that had been outstanding for a couple of years. I explained repeatedly that I moved in well after the period that the bill was for. They just kept insisting it was my bill. After a short while I decided I'd heard enough. I told them quite simply, I'm not paying it, and if they really want me to then they should take me to court for it, and WHEN I win, I'll then take them to court for loss of earnings, travel expenses, living expenses etc that I incur by attending court. Strangely enough, when I said that I was transferred to a very apologetic manager who declared there's been a computer error. I since saw something on TV that they'd done it to quite a few people.

All this was years ago, but suffice to say that as long as I live, nPower will never again get any business from me. In fact I once switched from a supplier that I was happy with just because I heard that nPower was buying them out.

I guess I'll only be staying with them until the end of the cheap rate. It beats me, Clueless, how they can afford to treat people like that and get away with it. If I, as a manager, had treated a client like that my Directors would want a really good explanation or my blood! This is why I'm considering referring the matter to Ofgen because of the arbitrary, cavalier, off-hand way they changed my agreed, contracted tariff to a higher rate, and then come up with two entirely different reasons as to why they did it - and expect me to meekly accept it. Besides, if they have done it to other and the others have just accepted it --- that's not good.

I would support your opinion of nPower Clueless. As an ex accountant I keep a close check on my meter readings and the bill calculations - Its easy on a spreadsheet. In my contract with nPower they said they would charge the first 4572 units per year at a higher rate and the rest at a lower rate. I believe this figure of 4572 was set by Government as other companies used the same figure. I noticed that they were charging more than 4572 units at the higher rate, and on both occasions I rang them they informed me that they were in compliance with their contract but their year did not have to be 365 days - it could be any period they wanted!

As I was only out of pocket by about £14, I couldn't be botheed to sue them. I just changed company. However I still regard this as a criminal fraud. I am pleased to say that the Government agreed and they have had to repay millions of pounds back. But why weren't the directors sent to trial.

I think in many ways there is as much corruption in business in this country as there is in many Arab countries. Most people wouldn't have noticed that they were being overcharged.

I have had aggressive doorstep selling from npower, being with Scottish Power, told them I wasn't interested and the guy became abusive. Would NEVER have anything to do with them.
