Just been round to take youngest son's partner's daughter's (still with me?) sixteenth birthday present and card.

She was listing off her presents to me, when it came to; "A week-end in Paris" I did a bit of a double take, until her mum said, "Oh! We're going too!"

    Err. Who's birthday?

Yes, I think I'm with you Doghouse.
A weekend in Paris for a birthday present ?
I thought I was lucky if I got a pair of stockings (and I don't mean tights - they hadn't been invented)
But I don't grudge it to the kids - I just wish it had been like that for me.
I hope they have a wonderful time.

Wow! Lucky girl. I don't even remember my 16th birthday. I hope they have a lovely time.

Right from a small child, our middle daughter wanted to spend her 18th birthday in New York - no presents, just a long week-end in New York. For various reasons she couldn't actually make that visit.

Her 18th birthday was Tuesday 11th September 2001.

Thanks for all your kind words.
Apparently, when her mum and our son told her that this trip was part of her birthday present (she got a nice camera from them too) she was taken aback a bit as for a moment she thought she'd be going on her own and was relieved to hear they'd be going with her too.

I had to smile when she read to me a letter from her grandfather on her father's side. He said he'd decided that when his grandchildren reached sixteen, he would no longer buy them birthday presents but make a donation to a charity. He said it was getting harder to find suitable presents (her mum chipped in saying "Well he wouldn't for a fiver, would he?") and he never got much feedback. (what did he expect for a fiver?) He hoped she got everything she wished for. (her mum said "Well good job she didn't wish for anything from him!") Fortunately the kid could see the funny side. It's not that he's hard up, either.

OMG, that gave me moosebumps s00k
I'd be to scared to ask for anything for a present after that.

Got an imitation leather jacket for my 16th, mum & dad couldn't afford a real one.

I can vividly remember our own daughter's eighteenth birthday, we took her and a dozen of her friends to a fantastic local French restaurant, sadly the restaurant is now gone and our daughter's forty-two!
