I've just been out the back for a smoke, and up in the sky, heading swiftly in my direction, was an orange glowing thing.

My first thought was it might have been NASA's stricken satellite:OUCH:

I quickly realised it wasn't, by virtue of the fact it wasn't moving quickly enough, so I summoned the wife to come and see, and told her it was. She briefly believed me, before pointing out is was probably a Chinese lantern.

Exactly the same thing happened to me earlier this year. I saw this glowing object in the sky at night time and couldn't work out was it was. Took me ten minutes to work out what it was ........ a Chinese Lantern:D

The chinese lanterns are actually quite dangerous if let fly to high in the sky, because they may fall onto something easy to burn and it may catch fire. It happened just recently in Somerton that one fell onto paper and caused an accident.

But they are beautiful no doubt.

Yes, sadly, the dangers of these things are many - coming down on fields on farmland is one :(

There have been incidents of livestock getting very ill and in some cases even dying, as a result of accidentally eating the wire frames after the lanterns landed in grazing land or were accidentally baled up in the hay.
