Just letting you know, kaz just tried using her laptop and got the BSOD so looking into it, 1 error message says BIOS issue and another says memory test fail. So bare with me.

Hmm can't even load up in safe-mode, it tries to adjust memory as it can't read/write, then just fails - looking more like HDD has given up grrr

Edit: extensive tests actually look like it's the RAM so will see if I can pick up a cheap one to test.

Crucial is well respected in the memory market if you need to order some Terry - and they are not the dearest either :)

I think I've cracked it, it has a second ram slot under the keyboard which I didn't even know was there until I came across it just now on google, so tested both rams individually and found 1 is faulty, off to order new ram :)

I am suprised you have not lent them that massive LONGK RAM you have,
Looking at the pic it seems it would go on servicing for years :-)

Will it boot and run with only one stick of RAM in bank 1? Some do, some don't. Be aware that you might be best to replace both sticks together, as some machines don't like two different makes/models of RAM in at the same time (something to do with how they present to the frontside bus or something equally non-understandable) - from memory (excuse the pun) I think its HP/Compaq and IBM/Lenovo machines that are guilty.

New ram ordered, found it easier to go to crucial site and let it scan for best setup as there's so many variations to get it wrong, plus they were already mixed grrrrr.

Thankfully I had a ram tester that runs from cd as a start up disk, it gave errors all over the place, so it was only a matter of time.

Depending on costs etc I always go with crucial but may use kingston, I find both to be pretty good.

Ram (the working one) worked in both slots, which was handy to confirm that they both work fine.

Well done mate - RAM faults can be a complete pain in the rear to diagnose at times :)
