Following on from the summer that can only be described as abysmal, I thought we could all take a bash at guessing the weather for the winter (well, from now through to March) - then we can look back and see who got closest once it arrives?

September - a few pleasant days with chilly evenings, however most days will see heavy showers and blustery winds

October - first half of the month, an improvement in the weather - dry days, balmy and warm with light winds (an Indian summer), then for the second half it will break down to be much colder and wetter, and even a touch stormy at times (thinking gale force winds etc)

November - Damp, dreich (there's a good Scottish word!) and generally miserable throughout; not much in the way of frosts, but it won't be warm either.

December - Much, much cooler with a couple of really cold weeks for the first half of the month, warming up a bit (still cold) for the second half of the month; no white Christmas.

January - continuation of the settled, cool but not freezing weather from over Christmas until we get into the second or third week when temperatures will drop heavily and will bring crisp, hard frosts and possibly snow toward the latter part of the month

February - Cold start to the month, however warming up quite a bit as the month progresses; still a good few heavy frosts overnight at least until the second or third week,

March - Will start off relatively mild, settled and pleasant, with temps rising steadily; mid month, a few really nice days with light winds and nicely settled - this will be followed by a thundery breakdown, leading into an unsettled, stormy period with high winds and heavy rains.

    What do you think?

    Briefly I think something along the lines of the following;

September - warm start with equal amounts of dry and wet spells, cooling as the month ends to averages of low/mid-teens in celcius, on the whole a nice autumn.

October - early in the month pretty unsettled, possibly with an autumn storm and similar temperatures to late Sep, first frost of the winter by the end of the month.

November - starting cold and sunny but followed by rain/sleet/snow and unsettled weather.

December - a mixed month of unsettled weather with snow and settled cold spells leaving us guessing about a white christmas

January & February - similar and on the whole very cold and frosty with snow at times.

March - starting cold but a mild spell of 'spring' like weather by the 2nd or 3rd week

    :)

      Worse case scenario?

We'll have another bitterly cold winter due to falling solar output, the positioning of the jet stream and yet another diversion of the North Atlantic Drift, due to the almost total meltdown of the Greenland ice sheet putting loads of fresh water into the North Atlantic.

Ironically, the effect of this temporary warming will have the opposite effect, the change in salinity could stop the warm water from sinking thereby turning off the entire "conveyor belt" effect.

Our part of Europe would no longer have the moderating influence of the Gulf Stream & would have to endure the "normal" northern european winter, -20c, sea ice freezing in the harbours etc.

Remember 1962/63? Months of frozen snow, at least that thawed in the summer. The real problems would start if the summers stayed cool enough so that the ice in the mountains didn't melt before the snows of the following winter come. It would only take a few years of that before glaciers start to roll down the valleys again.

I can't predict what the weather's going to do in the rest of Britain, but the island will carry on as usual, wet and windy all year round, with a few minor frosts during the winter.

However, I have it on good authority from a local amateur forecaster, that the whole of Britain will be hit by a snowstorm in February.

So do you think our weather patterns are still altering Zigs or are they returning to what we knew as normal a few decades back?

Sorry:redface: Just get wound up when they lecture me about global warming & co2 taxes, when they don't have the faintest idea about what they are talking about, co2 levels from geological times to the present day, planetary temperature swings.....

Ok, i'll stop now & go and have a bottle.

Local farmers are normally good for predictions, perhaps they should take over as weather men/women. :)

Well, I looked at my Fir Cones on the string, tested the Sea Weed hanging from the Lilac, then just to make sure did a bit of Quantum Physics on the computer to back it up and.......... I've no idea what it's going to be like, except for cold, dark, wet and depressing.:dunno::snork:
