I suffer from a lower back pain from time to time(heavy lifting),would appreciate any advice as to what new mattress to get ie hard ,soft, make or type ,have always had orthopedic mattresses but modern thinking has changed and now the experts say that a softer mattress would be more appropriate, What do you think,Thank you my friends:)

what about having something supporting that area while you sleep - for example a small cushion or an item of clothing folded in a strip not too big.
Also sleeping holding a pillow within your legs helps relieving stress on the back.
(I am quite interested in this subject as I am also quite sensitive to weight lifting etc)

We just bought a mattress for the mother in law , and found Bensons site very informative . It shows the 4 main build types of a mattress , they are available in 5 firmness ratings , 1 being soft and 5 being very firm. Now which mattress and firmness is correct for your condition would need to be discussed with the retailer or a physio .

      Another vote for Bensons here.

We had three beds in a fairly short space of time, including a memory foam one, and none of them were any good to me - long story short, we ended up in Bensons who directed me toward a bed thing that was hooked up to a computer which made some assessments and then went on to recommend a bed from their Kingsdown range.

After cursing the salesman upside-down for showing us a bed with a four figure price tag, I relented and lay on it; again, long story short, we bought it, helped along by the four years interest free credit to help us swallow the £3k + price tag, and we haven't looked back since.

As my pain has gotten worse over the last two or three years, I am even more thankful that we did go for it, as I would be in purgatory by now in a cheap bed.

The best advice I can offer is to go and try before you buy, and don't be tempted to scrimp on getting a good bed as its just not worth it.

Definitely a softer mattress for support in the hollow of the back! I did 10-hour days gardening, with the inevitable backache from being bent double, and a hard bed was torture. So are French 'sommiers' with strips of wood instead of a sprung base, and 2" thick foam mattresses.....

I bought a brand new memory foam mattress 2 weeks ago for my son's single bed because he was in so much pain with sciatica. He had it on the bed for two hours and had to revert back to his orthopaedic mattress as he said the memory foam was just too hard for him and he was in agony. To be honest he was in agony on both mattresses but I have kept the memory foam in case he decides in future that he does want a hard bed. He does find placing pillows in strategic positions under him does give him comfort so it might be worth a try WOO.
