I've always had the odd few sets pulled out by birds, and if it's become a problem I've netted over them, but I've now got flippin mice digging up my sets and nibbling them under the mesh, whilst the birds are still attacking them from above through the mesh.

Just when I thought the dreadfull failures of this year were coming to an end - remember when mice were biting off my strawberries and gathering them in mounds? I've since found they can do that just to nibble off the seeds on them.

Time to get some snappy traps out, placed in plastic tubs with small holes in the sides so birds can't get at them.

    Didn't know mice liked onions.

I'm a bit surprised that mice would pinch onion sets, I didn't think they'd like them.

Is it definitely mice? Squirrels are notorious for digging all sorts of bulbs up, and they are extremely cunning creatures, wouldn't take them long to figure out where you'd hid them.

Definitely mice or voles as nothing else could get through the layers of mesh over them, other than crawling/burrowing (found a burrow) under them. I've since found references to this happening elsewhere, and some sets just had the emerging green shoot nibbled off. Time to get the peanut butter out.

Something got through 25mm mesh (so not a squirrel) last night, pulled up and nibbled another set.
