They are all in cahoots @pete - same as all the bloatware that fills up our computers and phones, we have to keep buying bigger and faster devices just to stand still

It all sounds great! I would be happy to try out/test the new forum when it gets to that stage (I visit the forum most days, but not always for very long).

I won't miss blogs or the business directory if they disappear. Some form of business directory would be good if it was gardening-related businesses recommended by forum members (with no connection other than being a customer) but I don't see how that could be enforced. Businesses posting their own details isn't helpful to me (there are plenty of places to find that kind of info).

A simpler forum structure would be great too. I hardly ever start a new thread but on those rare occasions I have sometimes been puzzled as to where to put it. I generally just go to "New Posts" to have a look what everyone's up to.

If the "similar threads" section at the bottom of the page disappeared, I think that would be a good thing. I'm sure that's one of the sources of "zombie" threads getting resurrected.

Software runs on hardware, and sooner or later it conks out. The software is ancient, the server likewise so this had to happen eventually

@pete You do have a suspicious mind. Actually it's not an unreasonable question. I was a member of a photographic site which was hugely popular and a large corporate bought it. Not long after that the internet really started to boom and lots of other sites appeared. Over a period of a few years certain core functions of the site mysteriously failed and the new owners weren't willing to invest in either resolving them or moving to another platform. Numbers using the site dwindled to the point where the owners pulled the plug completely. That had clearly been their intention. A bit like the GW Forum, we only had a couple of weeks notice of the shutdown.
Somewhat different scenario with slow pages, but certainly a good excuse to get their users to shift to wherever the owners wanted to push them.

Ancient? I remember when we moved over to this, and I'm almost sure there was another one before that.

But no real reason for it not to work. There was another programme about the Voyager space mission recently. They said that the on board computers date from 1972, even though they flew in 1977. In spite of being subject to the harsh conditions of space, huge magnetic fields round Jupiter, high radiation in other areas, they still work. They stated that modern digital hearing aids have more computing power.
It goes without saying that they work directly in binary code, and not the modern bloatware that requires all this extra power. :love30:

What amazes me about Voyager is that they are 16 billion miles away and we can still pick up the faint signal from them.
Yet how many of us heard our parents calling when playing or reading.

The main reason in vulnerabilities in the code, which for sites like these is html - so the amount of code involved in running this forum will certainly be considerably more than ran that space mission... and the net result with any code is that it is written in good faith, then 'bad actors' will try find 'holes' in it and then they exploit those 'holes' for nefarious reasons... developers then revise code and eventually move from patches to entire new versions and include new features in those new version. At that point, however, the old versions stop being 'patched' and eventually the host servers don't like the situation as security certificates fall out of date and things then stop working as various small bits of code/script get blocked.

True, but they did point out that due to the vast distance and the fact that it runs on the same amount of power as a typical fridge light bulb, it takes 18 hours to send a message and another 18 hrs to get a response and we moan about slow pages. :roflol:
