    Hi there,

I'm very new to the gardening world after just buying my first house.

I had a moss issue with my back lawn, there were various clumps of moss growing in different patches.. I treated it using "Wilko Feed, Weed & Mosskiller for Lawns ". It seemed to work, the moss has now gone black and looks dead.

I'm just wondering what my next step should be. Should I rake / pull the dead moss out now and spread some new grass seeds? Or should I just leave it?

    Any help would be great!

Welcome to GC Dessie. :) We do have a 'Lawns' section that may be helpful to you if you'd like to wander around the rest of the site. Meanwhile, yes, you will need to rake out the dead moss. A lawn rake will be best (with long tines) as this won't damage the grass. If the patches are small I would leave it for the time being as the feed will spur re-growth and with spring now under way it should grow back in a few weeks. If it doesn't reappear then by all means top seed it with a little soil or fine compost to help germination. Don't forget new seed will need to be watered when it doesn't rain to stop it drying out. :)

Hi dessie, and welcome to GC :sign0016:

My grass took a beating last year and through the winter (and wasn't all that great to begin with if truth be told), so I am pretty much going through the same process you are.

I treated myself to one of these wee fellows which seems to be that bit better at getting the old thatch out than a rake on its own would be - I think its the fact that it is on wheels with sprung tines that allows a wee bit more pressure to be exerted on the surface of the lawn.

I'm no expert though, so its worth hanging around to see the replies from those who are more knowledgeable than I am.

Hope to see you around the forums :)
