Moving a David Austin shrub rose

Hello friends!

A few years ago i accidently planted a Roald Dahl rose right in a cluster of petennial oriental poppies. Because they are tap rooted i can't move these, so I think I need to move my rose, and thought this was a good time to do it.

Any tips? My plan was to prune so it looked a bit like a bare root rose and dig out what i can of it's roots without harming the poppies.

Is there anything i should consider?

That is what I have done myself in the past, moving an 'Amber Flower Carpet' rose after I think a couple of years to a new position. I would do it asap, while the rose is still more or less dormant. I had to cut through some of the longer roots when I dug mine up but it didn't mind a bit.

I have moved David Austin roses in the past and would say that a lot depends on how long it's been in the ground.

Pruning it before moving is definitely the way to go, and I would advise that you should be prepared to dig down a bit deeper than you might expect. I have cut through the deeper and thicker tap roots with no apparent harm to the rose.

In view of the situation some of the poppies might have to be sacrificed, but they are pretty tough so should soon "clump up" again.

I'd also advise having the planting hole all ready and prepared so that it's back in the ground before it knows what's happening.
