I think the bus to Newport goes passed one of these trees although you only catch a glimpse, does it have really huge light green leaves?

looked it up in a few books and it would appear that if I am seeing a catalpa on the bus it's probably C. bignonioides rather then C. speciosa as it's more rounded and doesn't really have a visible trunk (also a nowhere near the 100ft of C. speciosa ) very pretty tree though I'm now looking on eBay for some C. bignonioides seeds:hehe: although I'm not sure how well it would do in my garden as catalpa's like deep moist loamy soil, not much of that here:o

The first one i ever saw was in Canada in the '79 next to my aunt's garden, it had been pruned heavily to encourage extra large leaves, they were 18" long and over 12" wide, bigger than Paulownia.
I thought it was exotic but soon found they grew here and there are some massive specimens around.:thumb:

Yes they are flowering around here about now as well, pity they dont produce viable seed here, but the "beans" look very different.

It will be interesting to see if the one in Newport has seeds then as people are always banging on about how the Isle of Wight is milder then most places in the UK:scratch:

as we get successfully germinated Acacia dealbata seeds:cnfs: (first in the UK I might add:cool:)

    ***EDIT***
Person on here with the username "kev" says that he has two saplings which he grew from seed he got off a tree in Longleat:

So there might be a chance of viable seed on the one down here:luv:

Sorry couldn't see the picture first time round!

Used to see Catalpa quite a lot in Slovenia where it produced loads of pods and viable seeds with their long hot summers

As far as I know they dont produce viable seed here, I could be wrong.

A good hot summer is probably the key, day after day of 80F plus might be the answer, well into autumn.

Kev says, seed he got from Longleat UK, might have bought them at the visitor centre in a packet.
Thats how I came by my seed, in a packet.:D
The trees around here produce beans, but the seed wont germinate.

Off topic but I have just pulled off some Acacia Baileyana pods and got 20 or so seeds, first time it has seeded.:)

The kids have one in their garden here, always plenty of seed pods but no idea if the the seeds are viable or not.
