Pronounced pant ur doer. (parents lived there god bless them)
This old rose grew around my parents place it only flowered once per season as I remember and it flowers once now. It is very fragrant has small sharp spikes and is not user friendly. The flower is around 4" sometimes smaller. Anyone know what it is called. thanks

This site lists 7500 named roses.

    http://everyrose.com/everyrose/index.lasso

With so many roses to choose from, it is almost impossible to accurately name a Rose from a pic. For so many reasons... colours not always true from pics.,many roses look very similar, cannot smell them etc etc.

You need an expert in roses to help. But is the name really important?

    Just enjoy it.

Do you want to get the name so that you can plant some somewhere else? It's possible to take cuttings quite successfully of most of the old roses.

I have an old one which was old when I came to the house in 1980, similar looking to yours (second picture), the nearest I've found is Comte de Chamborde but it isn't exactly the same; as Silver Surfer says it's going to be difficult to identify exactly what you've got but it will be fun doing the research.

Thanks. Yes it is very difficult to name this one especially as it is very old. The fine horrible prickles that will get you in a flash may be a clue. There is one locally almost the same but it flowers twice per season. It is onward and upward no stone will..........

ClaraLou, you have got it right it looks exactly like the excellent photos in your link. I was going down the Moss Salet route. The colours and general look of the plants (I have 3) in the photos are exactly the way mine appear. I will make a ID tag and screw it to the wall. I have moved part of one and it is now in flower by a wall. This one will be sheltered and have a better chance of full sun, maybe it will flower longer. Many thanks all for your efforts a good outcome.
Pant-y-dwr could well be 'water hollow' ClaraLou. I have one neighbour that may know. My Grandfather spoke Welsh.
