Tomorrow is St George's Day but I met the old dragon when shopping in Sainsbury's today.

She was using the self-service check-out and was having problems. Now you or I would politely ask the assistant to assist her. This dragon was different.

"Oy! This machine isn't working properly."

"What seems to be the matter?"

"It's not reading what I'm buying."

Assistant picks up one item and swipes it in front of scanner. It reads perfectly and she puts it in the bag.

Dragon barges her out of the way and says "Let me have a go". The scanner doesn't beep and she says in a really nasty tone "See, I told you it wasn't working". Completely forgetting that she had just watched the assistant scan with no trouble.

The assistant say, politely, "You've got the bar code facing you instead of the scanner".

"So what! It should be able to read it any way."

"You really do need to have it facing the scanner otherwise the scanner can't read it."

    "Hmphh!"

Thirty seconds later - "Oy! There's no bar code on this clementine."

"I'm sorry madam but they don't have bar codes so you have to press the 'Look up item' - like this."

    "Hmphh."

She fills up her first carrier bag and puts it in her trolley. Scanning machine says 'Items removed from shelf' (can't remember the exact terminology) and the assistant, looking really fed up, comes over and says that you can't remove anything until you have paid.

"Are you accusing me of stealing?"

This sort of thing went on for another few minutes and a supervisor came over and said "Let me help you".

"Why, do you think I'm a moron?"

I was using the machine the other side of her one and I said, quite loudly, to the woman at the machine next to me "It's St George's Day tomorrow but the dragon has turned up one day early."

Roars of laughter from people around us and swear words from dragon.

I put my bags in my trolley and whilst walking away called out "Have a nice day." :heehee: :loll:

I hope none of you were the dragon lady. :happydance:

Talking of self service machines at supermarkets, I found out something I didn't know the other day. I was scanning my items and the next thing in the trolly was a free local paper which I had picked up, I placed it in my bag and immediately the machine started saying "unexpected item in bagging area" I took the paper out and it stopped, soon as I put it back, it started again so I asked the assistant why it was doing that and apparently when you scan something the machine knows the EXACT weight of what will be placed in the bag, if you try to place anything else in without scanning it the machine KNOWS!!!! stops people scanning one item and trying to sneak two items into the bag!! After I had paid and the machine was telling me to remove my items I could then take the free paper!!:rolleyespink:
