    Hi all,
My 6 yr old has grown a plant from a peanut (he thinks!. I've got it in a little pot outside and it's doing well, 4" tall with lots of new leaves. Do I bring it in for the winter or will it be ok outside? Anyone any idea what it'll look like eventually? I wasn't aware that you could even grow plants from peanuts - DOH!

Windy, we have a squirrel that grows them for us! he buries them in pots around the nursery. I have grown a few under glass in a very sandy compost and have had small nuts grow just below the surface. They cannot survive outside being a tropical/subtropical plant. They have novelty value but don't expect to go into peanut production! [IMG]

    Hi windy
We grew peanuts about 30 years ago - just for the novelty. They grew OK in the greenhouse but we cleared them out in the winter with all the veggie stuff. Didn't even think of overwintering them.

Our squirrels plant oaks, hazel and loads of walnuts - they're a b***** nuisance [IMG] .

If it is a peanut the leaves will look a bit like clover. They do grow easily and will have nuts on when old enough. This should be fascinating and instructive for children as the peanuts develop under the soil!
I do hope he has got a peanut, and is not carefully cultivating a weed as I have often done!
    :D

Liz, yes the leaves are clover-like so I think he's got it right. He came home from Beavers a few weeks ago with a jar full of sprouting seeds. When I asked him what they were he said "something somethings". Turned out to be mustard seeds :D :D

found this one in a phormium this morning at work. Someone puts peanuts out all year round in their garden behind the nursery and here is where he stores them. [IMG]
