I've got loads of pears on my tree. The wasps have started to eat them so they must be ripe. I'm told that the way to tell, is to press your fingers on the narrow bit at the top - if it feels soft, they're ripe!

Hi Tiarella, If you press the top part of the pear often enough it will go soft anyway :D :D . Actually it depends on which type of pear it is. For instance, Conference pears are ripe and very sweet when they are still hard and are getting past their best when they start to go soft. Things are never easy when you grow fruit and veg - or anything else [IMG] . Enjoy your pears [IMG]
