    I've just been given, by my daughter, a Phal that's in trouble.
    Her ex gave it to her a week before Mother's Day.
    By MD, all the blooms and buds had fallen off. I suspect very poor lighting.
    What I'm questioning is the white mould(?) that seems to cover the exposed roots.
    Plenty of good roots in the pot, but I won't repot it until I know what to do about, if anything.

    Too much watering. The roots are glistening with the wet. Desperately in need of a new, transparent, pot and fresh orchid bark to grow into.

    @Tidemark
    That is a bit of an artifact. She was very careful with watering as she drowned the previous one.
    I suspect the media is crap and I really want to repot it, but not till I know what to do about the mould.

    Mould grows in damp conditions. Ask any person living in sub standard housing. I have grown orchids for nigh on fifty years and the one thing they don’t like is to have their feet in water. I “water” mine with roughly a tablespoonful poured onto the pot and allowed to drain, yes, allowed to drain, every three weeks.

    But if I am Miguel in Fawlty Towers and know nahthing, good luck with your project.

    These plants usually come with peat/coir plug under the roots nowadays. Plug absorbs a lot of water and roots rot, even though it looks dry on sides through clear pot. Roots in the pot are already half rotten. Take it out of the pot immediately and check, let dry a bit, and plant into fresh orchids bark. Mould is from being too wet all the time, maybe even orchid was kept in a packaging sleeve.

    Remove all the rotten bits of course.

    Could the "fungus" be the white residue / salts like you get on the top of the compost of potted plants when they have been watered with too much fertiliser ?

    As said it looks over watered, would just leave it alone for a good week until the roots look like this, then re-water with no fertilisers, allowing all excess water to fully drain out of the pot.
