So would a camera cost a fortune - and which one would be dumbo proof?

That's a leading question. :) You have to consider your budget to start with and whether to buy new or used.

The prices can vary a great deal. New 'point and shoot' (pocket sized) cameras can be bought for under £100. Quite good 'bridge' cameras (a bit bigger with a great deal of features, including fairly high power zoom and a load of settings that you may not use) can be bought for under £200.

            For example:-
Buy Canon Powershot SX430 20MP 45x Zoom Bridge Camera at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Bridge digital cameras, Cameras, Cameras and camcorders, Technology.

Some of our more knowledgeable camera people can tell you more.

@Tetters my friend all you need is a compact camera and if need be just take your photos on the automatic setting;)

There are many point and shoot cameras costing between £50/£100 and they all do the job,if you need any more advice just ask:smile:

If you want a Macro setting Tetters be sure to check the details for that, not all cameras have it. :)

I can heartily recommend the Panasonic DMC-G2, of which there are quite a few on ebay @Tetters; although this is a bit more talented than your average compact camera, (it is a micro four thirds system), and is sufficient to keep real photographers happy (like Mrs C) it is also gifted in the automatic settings department and works really well as a point and shoot and is capable of making numpties like me look good.

We paid a small fortune for ours when it was new (well over £500 with the lenses), and it gets absolutely hammered (barely leaves Mrs C's side)

What a helpful bunch you are  I have spent the last hour researching this subject until the headache started, and I have to say that ........

...... this is the reply to my ignorance that made me smile most.

The camera I have at the moment is a Sony DSC-S80, which I bought on eBay ages ago. I also managed to source an instruction book, which is put away somewhere, because it all looked too complicated. When I actually managed to work out how to get a picture from that onto the puter, and then transfer it to e mail, or forum I felt like a right smart ar ticle ;)

Aye, moving from a DSC-S80 you will see a MASSIVE improvement, even with a half decent point and shoot camera.

Righto, I decided I couldn`t really stretch to a proper posh one, so I just ordered a Sony DSC
W800 Camera kit with 8GB, SD card and case from Tesco for £75 ...and it has a macro function on it. With a bit of luck and a fair wind, I may have it up and running in about 6 months time - if I apply what is left of my little grey cells..... it actually will be the first NEW camera I`ve owned since my brownie 127 back in the 1960`s

Hey Mr Woo - look what you`ve started

"Sony W800 has a 20.0MP 1/2.3" (6.17 x 4.55 mm ) sized CCD sensor . You can shoot at maximum resolution of 5152 x 3864 pixels with aspect ratios of 4:3 and 16:9. W800 has a native ISO range of 100 - 3200 but unfortunately, Sony W800 doesn't have RAW file support. If you need a Compact camera with a RAW support, consider or in the same price range.

Sony W800 is not the highest resolution Small Sensor camera. Kodak Astro Zoom AZ651 with its 21.0MP sensor is leading in this class."

Tetters, if you have any problems or questions, however small, with the camera just ask, either in this thread or pm and we'll sort it............if I can take a snap, I'm more than sure you will excell at it.:love30::snorky:
