At very low altitude too. Mightily impressive but pretty scary.

There's something I saw on the news years ago, and I wish I could find the clip on Youtube but surprisingly, nobody seems to have posted it up.

See if anyone can remember this.

The US air force and Lockheed Martin were doing a high profile public debut of their brand new stealth fighter/bomber (I think it might have been called F-22, unless I'm getting mixed up with a popular computer game of the day). The plane took off, did a very short circular flight, then there was a big cloud as the pilot jettisoned all the fuel in preparation for a crash landing. Then the plane came in to land, but rather than being all graceful, it sort of did a butterfly impression, bobbing up and down. It said on the news the computer that keeps it stable had gone wrong, so minor adjustments of the flaps had turned into grossly exaggerated movements, and it literally looked like it was flapping its wings almost. I found it quite funny. I'm sure they've since sorted that problem, but it does highlight the immense engineering that goes into these things. I heard somewhere that the Eurofighter for example, is deliberately designed NOT to be perfectly aerodynamic, so that it can do more impressive moves, but the price is that a human pilot could not possible hold it straight, so all manner of computers and sensors have to translate the pilot's input into literally thousands of fully automated minor corrections. It would be terrifying to think what would happen if one of those sensors failed mid flight. All credit to the engineers who will have thought of that, and will have no doubt (and hopefully) built in all sorts of backup measures just for such eventualities.
