My husband was in the garden yesterday supposedly tidying up some of our established shrubs and trees. He is not a natural gardener but he does usually have common sense so I left him to it. While I was not watching he took a hacksaw and cut through the trunk of our beautiful established plum tree that used to grow over my son's playhouse. All that is left are the thinner branches that grow up from the base of the tree and a few smaller branches that grow from lower down the trunk.

Needless to say I am devastated. Is there any chance the tree will recover? Should I leave it be or prune back further? I love to garden but I am not massively knowledgeable so any advice would be appreciated. I will try to post a picture of what is left.

    Thanks in advance.

The wispy bits from the base are suckers from the rootstock so no plums there and it sounds suspiciously like the same for the others :( are they growing above or below the graft?
It rather sounds like a new tree is in order

OMG I do feel for you. Sorry I have no practical advice either. If my OH did anything like that, Miss Marple would have another country house murder on her hands! ;)
