Hi everyone My local fish shop has stopped selling Cod due to the cost (no one is buying it) Tomorrow they start selling Pollock can anyone tell me are they similar in taste and are they the same family. Many thanks.
Our fishermen are dumping a million tons of dead Cod back into the sea every year and the consumer has to put up with Pollock. I don`t know how different Pollock is but I would say, the nearest thing to Cod would be Coley. And surely they could supply that.
Never tried Pollock Woo but if our local chippie had it I would try it although we only have fish and chips a couple of times a year. I used to have Rock Eel(Rock Salmon/Huss/Dogfish) when I was 'a nipper', hardly see it at all now. Back then Coley and Whiting were looked on as cheap fish, don't think any of them are cheap now.
Thanks Strongy ,You can still get Rock salmon here £3-80p Cod is £4 60p + portion of chips £1 80p Hence Cod and chips £6 40p,They are selling Pollock for £3. Will give It a try and cook my own chips
I think I know Pollock, another flakey white fish? I wish I could get any flakey white fish here, although. We have what is called pescada from the North Sea but it's "fishier" tasting than cod or haddock ... sorry, I don't do "fishy" tasting. I do miss my fish, cod or haddock and particularly smoked haddock or kippers which I adore. The English shops here will bring them in at a cost obviously. The prices there are horrendous ... I remember that when we went back to the IoW last October. Give it a try, woo, what can you lose?
The Pacific pollock is part of the cod family so shouldn't be too different in flavour. A very nice pub in one of the villages near us has an excellent, and popular restaurant, and apart from its normal a la carte menu it has a senior citizens lunch menu. Amongst other things they do cod, chips and veg (or salad) plus coffee for £6 and on a Monday they also include a very good dessert in the price. Very good value for money
Woo I bought some pollock from morrisons it is lovely we really enjoyed the taste, they were done in breadcrumbs or batter.taste very much like cod, in morrisons they are pre packed the ones i bought
Hi Not being a fish eater particularly, or anything else, i had heard that pollack would be our next cod, cos of fishing regulations, population of cod etc. this was quite a while ago so now pollack must be coming into our shops, but where as it was thought of the 'cheap' option, of course it no longer is. Fish & chips used to be a treat, but a cheap one. it was a 'take-away' years ago. now getting fish & chips is as expensive as getting any other take-away. it's a shame i think that part of our culture is going. cheers
We tried to buy some Cod Fish Fingers for g/grandchildren and couldn't find them anywhere. After reading this thread I realise, of course, it's probably because there isn't any cod about. Perhaps "Pollack Fish Fingers" will be available soon, or are they the ones they just call Fish Fingers ? Did a search and found this information: "Pollack is a bland, white fish that flakes easily. It's a good alternative to cod and it takes a sauce well." "In August, Bird's Eye announced that it was putting Alaskan pollack in place of cod in some of its fish fingers". I am sure lots of people have eaten pollack - so what is your opinion of it please? ________________ _____________
Tried it years ago in a restaurant in north Cornwall. It was a posh restaurant and I was with a couple of mates from Uni, one of whom didn't give a fig about anything. When I ordered pollock as a starter he yelled at the top of his voice 'Do you want a right pollock or a left pollock?'. At the time (the early 70s) I must admit I cringed but I can see the funny side now. Oh, and it was very nice. Not at all 'fishy' LoL.
I think you can still get Birdseye cod fish fingers, but if not, the haddock ones are OK. I prefer haddock to cod anyway, of which there still seems to be plenty about. Its better bought fresh and home cooked, the frozen battered stuff is a bit yuck, and most of the chip shops around here are pretty awful. Probably why so many people say they dont like fish. I've seen pollock, but usually it says, "Alaskan Pollock", can it really be worth transporting it all that way? I was told by someone who smokes fish once that smoked pollock, is actually better than smoked haddock and most people prefer it.
Quite agree Pete. We can actually still go down to the pier in Scarborough and buy haddock straight from the fish market, that is if you want to buy a stone at a time. Still it is still brilliant after freezing. We used to be able to get cod the same way but not now. And that pre-battered frozen stuff has no taste at all. Fortunately here we have in town what Dickie Bird, the ex cricket umpire called in his book, 'the best chippy in the country'. Reckon he wasn't far wrong.
Keep buying it John. Support you local fishermen. Anyone who has not had fresh fish, has not had "Fish" at all.
I bought some Pollock fish fingers to try and I thought they tasted of earth  even our cats refused to eat them. They just turned their noses up and walked off with their head held high  [ 24. November 2007, 06:50 PM: Message edited by: Kandyfloss ]
