problem??

    Is this normal for the base of the tree?

    Looks fairly normal to me - looks like a birch tree? You will generally find that very little will grow around the base of a tree due to the lack of light and the thirst of the tree.

    Ok thanks for that. Yes I think its a birch. Weeds certainly don't have a problem growing underneath!

      Survival of the fittest is the way of it for weeds - if they cannot grow rapidly in the face of adversity, they do not survive.

      You can get some shade loving plants that might thrive under the tree, but I suspect that you would never be done watering and feeding them.
