Protecting blueberry bushes over winter?

Good morning everyone. I am new to trying blueberry bushes and have planted two in containers on my patio, where they have grown masses during this hot summer. I am unsure as to whether or not they need protection during the winter, which in the South West is not usually severe. Do the containers need taking into my garage, or should I wrap bubble wrap around the pots?
I would appreciate any information you can offer.

HI WELCOME Specific care of blueberries in winter is usually not necessary, as fully dormant blueberry plants are generally very cold hardy, and rarely suffer any severe blueberry winter damag but it would be good toContinue to water the plant regularly, because a well-irrigated bush is in better shape to tolerate winter chills. Protect the blueberry bush from cold winter winds and ice damage by wrapping it in burlap. Start at the top of the plant and cover the bush with burlap, pinning the material together. Continue wrapping until the entire bush is covered.

I think blueberries are pretty tough and probably hardy.
I'd be more inclined to stop the pots getting waterlogged if possible.

 

Hello and welcome to the forums I don't do anything with my blueberry plants in pots over winter.

 

Many thanks to all who have replied. We do not usually have severe winters near Bristol, but I could easily move my plants into my garage if the weather forcast looks nasty. Otherwise, it looks as if they will be OK.

They'll be fine as long as, as others have said, they don't get waterlogged for any length of time.

Blueberry bushes are as tough as old boots.

But one word of warning though. They only time I've killed one was before I knew their soil requirements. They need ericacious compost (mildly acidic). Before I understood this I fed one with fairly fresh chicken poo and it died within days. General purpose compost on its own won't hurt it but it won't be at its best, and give it anything alkaline and it's doomed.

 

Many thanks for that. I'll watch out for excess water. My plants were installed in ericacious mixture and have gone ballistic during the hot summer - watered with rainwater. They will need some brutal treatment when pruning time comes round. I have never seen plants put on so much growth in a few months.

We had 3 varieties of blues in pots for several years up here in the north so doubt you will have any problem in your milder climate.

To prevent waterlogging, put the pots on some bricks or pieces of flagstones etc to ensure the winter rains can drain away freely.

 

When young they don't need pruning.
