I am OK at pruning roses the few I have I prune feed and enjoy. But my mother in laws rose bushes (floribunda I'd presume ) are very badly overgrown to about 5 feet. The buds are now forming on the top stems. Would I be OK to cut this back to 12" in one go , as I cant see any buds that low down . If this is OK to do would early March be the right time ?
Please note if anything goes wrong I am a dead man , she will make my life a misery :help:

Yes i have done this a few times. To get them under control shop them back to about 15 inches, then when you see a shoot, chop them back to that shoot. You will have stems that will usually be around 12-14 inches long. You will lose the odd stem i have no doubt but it will be under control.

Hi Harry for increased flower production leave more older canes to remain on the bush.Established Floribundas as a general rule of thumb ,should have one third of the previous years growth cut back.Floribundas produce lots of flowers, so by leaving a greater number of canes will enhance the rose's ability to flower even more, and March should be fine, hopefully the frosts will be clear by then:)

Just do as you're told,Harry!!:heehee: I must admit when I was a long haired, scruffy, oil stained overall wearing Radar Fitter in the RAF I always told officers that if I ever called them SIR it would be spelled CUR.
