I am still having trouble with the clutch on my car, and given that I have covered less than 1000 miles since buying the car, I am keen to get the problem resolved - so, I am about to email the selling dealer, but don't wish to come off as being narky or cocky - could someone just give me a quick opinion on the below please?

"Further to my contact a few weeks ago, I am sorry to say that I am still having problems with the clutch/transmission on my A4 – given that I haven’t quite done 1000 miles since purchasing the vehicle, it is disappointing at best. The symptom where it would judder when cold has actually decreased, however the gearchange is still obstructive when cold (particularly first to second changes); even when warm, some of the gearchanges are obstructive/graunching. The other notable change is the behaviour when warm and in traffic for a while, the car will then judder every single time I pull away – the clutch slips three or four times as drive is picked up, and this happens regardless of how many revs are applied.

I have done some very basic research, and it would appear that (amongst other things) it is not unknown for the release bearing on the clutch assembly to fail on this particular model, and when it does so it contaminates the friction plate and the flywheel with grease – sadly, it also appears that the only way that this can be correctly diagnosed is to physically inspect the clutch/flywheel which requires something of a strip-down to be carried out. Whether this is the problem with my vehicle or not remains to be seen, however I am confident that something is not ‘right’ with either the clutch, flywheel or both.

The vehicle is otherwise perfect, and as you will understand I am keen to have this matter resolved to ensure its reliability, as well as to prevent any potential damage that may be occurring whilst the fault is present, therefore I would appreciate your advice as to how we proceed to having this resolved.

I look forward to hearing from you."

    Thanks :)

      Maybe change this....

      for this....

. I'm sure we are both aware of our rights and obligations under the Sale of Goods act, however I am keen to resolve this issue amicably, so I would be grateful if you could contact me regarding this as soon as possible within 7 days.

        Hi FC

Looks good and lots of detail, only a couple of suggestions I would add,
        • include the date the last time you contacted then
        • also if me I would be worried that it is dangerous to drive ?
        • I would take out "very basic" and just leave it as research
        • take out "perfect" use Sound instead
        All of the above suggestions

            Thanks :)

I've pretty much nicked your paragraph word for word Mum - had a thumping headache since getting out of bed this morning, so my old noggin isn't in the right condition to do much more.

I don't want to go mentioning sale of goods act just yet, as they haven't tried fobbing me off or anything so far - they've had the car back once, and couldn't find a fault, which is feasible as it drives fine on some occasions.

Fingers crossed that I get a positive response from this email.

Not a squeak back from the dealer - presumably as its poets day they decided to leave it until next week. I hope that's the case at least.

                  Give it time, FC.

First it will need to be read by a minion who decides which person it needs to be sent on to.

Then, the person it's sent on to will try and locate someone to delegate it to.

Once it's been delegated, your previous encounter will need to be referred to.

Then it will be delegated on to someone else in the "Oops!" Department; who will then forward it to the Bovine Excrement Unit so they can draft a suitable reply.

They might well be stalling until the new year FC. Nobody wants to work or get involved around the christmas period.

I can understand the reluctance to take it in at this time of year, and to be honest that sort of does me a favour as I'd rather not be without it at this time of year. I've got a years warranty on it, but want to get it sorted sooner rather than later

                      Hi FC
you have the option of getting an AA or RAC report on the problem.
You should advise the Seller that, if he is unable to quickly resolve the issue, you are minded to pay for an AA/RAC report and, subject to their confirmation of the existance of the described defect, you would submit the invoice to them for payment.

Had a response from the dealer this morning stating that as they could not find a fault with the car, they feel that the best course of action is for me to get a second opinion (fair enough).

I spoke with my usual mechanic, however he is reluctant to spend three or four hours stripping it down, and putting it back together but not actually fixing anything - that, and he has been bitten by warranty type arguments before (fair enough).

He reckoned my best bet is to take it to Mr Clutch and get them to do one of their free assessments and give me a quote for repair - does this sound like a plan?

                      Anyone used Mr Clutch?

Sorry, FC; no experience of Mr Clutch :dunno:

However, a quick look and it is a "no obligation" service.

Their website looks pretty good, and to be fair I doubt that my mechanic would have suggested it if they were a bunch of cowboys - he is a good lad, and I've known him for years, so it wouldn't be like him to lead me up the path.
