A good life well-lived, I'd say. A refreshing change from the run of the mill politician, more principled and with great integrity, unafraid to be controversial and to go against the flow. Or is that only because he never had real power?

      Just read about this.
I think he'd have been maybe a slightly watered down version of his controversial self had he had more power

R.I.P Tony I will remember you among'st other things for your foresight on joining the EEC and can remember you saying that you "loathed" the EEC; and that it was "bureaucratic and centralized" and "of course it is really dominated by Germany. :paladin:

I always thought he waffled on a bit much, but I think he meant well.

A sad loss. He always appeared a deeply principled man.
Power can corrupt and Tony Benn would have made an interesting subject. I think that he would have risen above it, but we'll never know.

A bad week for the left all round.

I like[d] Tony Benn but didn't always agree with his policies. Having said that he was probably the most honest and true politician that we have had in a long time, and he did dislike Tony Blair, Neil Kinnock intensely [the latter because he lost the battle of being Labour Party Leader to him]. The strange thing is that he did have, in private, a good word for Maggie Thatcher for whom I have very negative thoughts. So, all in all, we have lost a good man who didn't back down when challenged about something he believed in, and one of whom the likes we won't see again me'thinks.

I had the pleasure of listening to him speak about his life and politics. (I am a gov and pol graduate) he sent shivers down my spine with his integrity and intellect which far surpassed mine. I cried today along with dame Shirley Williams he was my favourite

Yes. It's much easier to stick to a strict principle when it never has to be tested by the need to balance and placate wildly disparate groups of people, and look like a good guy while you're doing it.

A man of great principals, I think. I always enjoyed hearing him speak. He always had something interesting to say, even if I didn't always agree. The thing that struck me, was how he could make one look at things from another 'angle'. We won't see his like again...
