Raspberries

Last year I planted two raspberry canes (Polka) which are autumn fruiting. I pruned them right back to the ground in Feb and gave them a good compost mulch. I was weeding in the patch they're planted in today and noticed they have put up shoots all over the place, there must be at least 12 separate shoots in addition to the original canes. Will they all become 'proper' raspberry canes? Should I just leave them to do their own thing - there's plenty of room for them at the moment - and will this happen year on year?

They are doing what they should , but any weak canes (spindly) cut them out and leave the robust canes which will be the more fruitful and taking out the weak will increase your yield, you could also thin out to give them more light and air but I think leave that to the 3rd and 4th Year.

Ha ha, easy for some. I've never successfully taken cuttings of anything in my life. Will be back to you in the autumn for step by step idiot proof directions

 

yes look forward to it , its a date in October !!! you can use a clematis pot (nice and deep) or outside in the garden.

Spruce

 

I was a bit late cutting my Autumn Raspberries down, but thought I'd give it a go trying to get some bits to root and put about 50 in some ex-Morrisons flower buckets converted to pots and filled with a sand/MPC mix then put them in a polytunnel.

They've sprouted, but have yet to find out whether I've got some leafy sticks or 50 new raspberry plants.

 

when did you take the cuttings ?

 

Think it might have been January. They were still definitely very dormant.
