Yes, I know it's all in a good cause. And I'll try to maintain a rictus grin in the supermarket tomorrow when I'm besieged by people dressed up as hilarious giant bananas etc. But the truth is, I can't stand it. Sorry, I just can't. :help: I think Sainsburys is really missing a trick here. I'd gladly donate a couple of pounds to charity on my way into the store just to be sure I could shop in a comedy costume free zone. Hell, I'd throw in a tenner if I could stick Jamie Oliver's red nose ... well, you get the idea.

[align=left]ClaraLou I totally agree with you, can't stand the comic relief on the telly either, the acts are SO bad they are pathetic!!! I suppose I could tolerate it better if I really believed it was going to make a difference in Africa, but in my opinion the only thing that is ever really going to make a difference is contraception, but for some strange reason nobody ever mentions it!!!!!

I know what you mean Clare. People have been dressing up and collecting money at my office all week, and although I've tried to ignore them and get on with my work I have to admit to buying some home made cookies on Monday, they tasted so nice I had to buy some more each day so I've done my bit :heehee: I can't stand the self promotion of so called celebraties for these kind of events so the telly is remaining off.

    Its awful.

A fiver can save a child's sight. Great, except that a fiver can also help the PDSA to treat a sick animal whose keeper can't afford to pay for the treatment, or it can buy toys, clothes and medicines for orphans in eastern europe, or it can help greenpeace stop people slaughtering wales etc, etc, etc.

There are many, many good causes, and some I personally do give small donations to from time to time, but what offends me is that as there as so many very good causes, comic relief gets the lion's share of media coverage and support. Only instead of just telling us what's happening, and giving us the choice to contribute, for comic relief they first try to destroy our souls with mindnumbingly dull 'comedy', and then just when we're nearly crushed, they move in with the major guilt trip and try to convince us that it is our fault personally that people are suffering, and that if we give our money to the PDSA or Greenpeace or the orphans in eastern europe, as opposed to their charity, then we are heartless scum.

Hi Claralou , I tend to agree with you . I have always tried to avoid these charity marathons - Comic relief - children in need etc. I do donate a little to their worthy causes though.
But we came in after our Friday trip to the local watering hole and switched on the TV , the sketch below was on. It was really funny and really really star studded . I expect it is on catch up TV or YouTube by now - watch it if you can !

Found it :dbgrtmb: Watch it all the way through .

That was a very good sketch - but it still doesn't make me want to give to red nose day/comic relief etc.

I'm of the same view as all of you - excepte I've never watched any of the TV programmes about them :heehee:.

I support the charities that I want to without being pressured into any big publicity pushes or donation box rattling. In the last year I have supported over a dozen chairties and actually done the fund raising for some of them. Unfortunately, no matter how good these big publicity causes are they detract considerably from other charities.

Just as an aside - if you give anything to charity please fill in a Gift Aid form as the charity then gets an additional 28% from the government (the tax you paid on earning that money). If you don't have any taxable income then don't sign the form otherwise you will get a bill from the taxman for the 28% they gave on your behalf .
