I always check my dogs feet regularly - just as well, as last night I noticed an area that was obviously irritating him. At first I thought it was an insect bite - but having visited the vet - no twas a grass seed. Fortunately still shallow enough for the vet to remove it without an anaesthetic and surgery - just a probe.

Thought I'd better remind all you dog owners out there at this time of year, to check your dogs feet regularly.

Good point Fran, valid for cats as well as dogs.

A golden retriever of mine once had a nasty growth above his eye thanks to a grass seed. Last year was barley in the field at the back of my house, this year wheat so I regularly check my cats for any seeds in their fur.

Thanks for the reminder Fran! I once had a similar problem with one of my adventurous cats - he wandered around the local fields quite happily until one year they planted barley and in his sniffing adventures he managed to get a barley spine lodged up his nostril and had a very nasty wound developed until I realised what it was. The vet hadn't noticed it either and was treating him for a sting!
