I Know this is completly irrelevant but i've just had an e mail from an old course tutor about the 1790s shoe I found. Seems he just found the e mail I sent him in 2006 !

He's a smashing chap & i'd just like to share his website with you all.

    http://www.apotropaios.co.uk/ritual_marks.htm

If you get the chance to go on one of his courses, you won't be dissapointed.

I think builders still make their ritual marks - but I think they just tend to say "Andy was here" or similar :(

    Clare! :)

Thats an interesting link Ziggy, I liked the witch bottles - not heard of them before.

Here's what I've found in our 1930s house under the floorboards during my DIY over the last couple of years:

All discarded by workmen either on the original build or when it was re-wired in the 50s. So nothing at all to do with folk magic, but it's fascinating to glimpse into the past.

I like the old bag of Smiths Crisps on the right. There was a little mummified bird too that must have somehow got trapped. The green paper has some sketches of a room layout.

I'm fascinated by finding carpenters marks on the old joinery. Scribbled under some of my floorboards are the workings out, how many feet of board they needed and associated costs.

Oh they do Alice. I've earned a living out of putting right what bt engineers have carved into medieval wattle & daub walls while they were putting their cables in.

It took 25 gallons of water just to get the daub to a state in which I could effect the repairs:dh:

Think i've mentioned the scafolders that drew a willy on the 17th century lead already :dh:

Don't worry about the newspaper Ziggy, only if you can find it.

Out in the garden I've found 100s of old clay tobacco pipe pieces in the topsoil. I'm sure you know what they are Ziggy, the Victorian and earlier farm workers used them to smoke, they were mass produced and when they broke they just chucked them away in the fields, here’s a few of them in my collection:

I can see we will have a riveting next get together comparing old woodbine packets :D
