Howdy today or tomorrow the move to the new host will happen.

I aim to keep downtime to under 30 minutes.

however as a server move requires a change of nameservers etc normally downtime would be 2-3 days

To avoid this i will be pulling the database remotely while the dns updates

basically for 2-3 days some of you will still be seeing our usa server and some will see the new faster uk server

so no posts will be lost, and to avoid having to go offline for 3 days

both old and new server/site will be using the uk server database

however this means that the site will be slower for while the dns update happens

after the dns is locked down, we'll be fully on uk server and then the speed will really begin showing

    so in basic

    1) 30minutes-hour downtime
    2) 2-3 days at about 75% of current speed
    3) fully on new server which is 2-3 times faster than our current one :)

ok move is done, so now begins the dns updates which will take 2-3 days from when the domain registrar changes them

the site will be alittle slow for a few days (since we're basically "streaming" the database opposed to normal local database) , but slow beats offline all together :)

        It's definitely noticeable.
I'll just have to be patient - not a trait I use much!
Looking forward to flying next week.

as an added note, i have access to the not public local copy of the database

it has page loads of about 0.3 seconds for index page and about 0.2 for forum/thread pages

aka very very fast indeed we;re talking 10% of a second etc

but as we wait for the dns to update

let us all enjoy listening to the cisco kid intro!

'What's New?' seems woefully slow, around 1 minute to load, and it seems quicker just to look for new posts. Only for a few days though?

Not sure if it helps at all, but I think that things may be moving along - I have just tried posting having logged in from the direct web address, and twice got an 'oops' message saying that it couldn't find the route.

I am posting now from the other address sent out in the alert; perhaps today is the day that everything locks down?

Some strange goings on. I made a post on one of my threads, and it doesn't show? I can see it when I look at 'your content', but the thread seems to have vanished?
