I'm a Gardening newbie: please be gentle.

    I have a border (approx 2oft x 4ft) which I intend using for Carrots, Swede & Onions.
A work collegue advised me to 'improve' the soil by mixing in 160 litres of Multi-purpose compost and an equal amount of manure which I have done.

A neighbour has since told me that this was a bad idea and to remove as much of the new mix as possible and replace it with new soil.

Can anyone please advise me of what is the right thing to do?

    Thanks in advance.

i think you ll be fine with your mix, the carrots are difficult to grow if soil is freshly manured, maybe this is what you neighbour is concerned about.
if the manure was fresh from the origin then there may be a concerm, and i would turn it over to a depth of 8", but i would risk it if it was from a garden centre.
Carrots ar tricky things at the best of times, maybe best to wait a month be4 you plant them, you can buy onion sets which look like mini onions and will give you a better crop, swedes are a winter veg, need sowing thinly in rows then thinned out to about 8" apart.
