Cyber shot dsc hx60, if that means anything to anyone.
But mostly I think its a pc problem.

I downloaded the software from the Sony website, and connected the camera to my lap top, up came a page with my pictures I had taken.

Went out and tried a few more shots and a bit of video.

Plugged it into the pc and all I get is a message saying turn on a camera, I've told it umpteen times, the bloody thing is turned on, but the dopy laptop is not recognising it, or at least the Sony programme isn't, as I get a bleep from the pc when I do connect it and the camera says its connecting, but nothing happens.

    Any ideas?????

I've tried reconnecting it several times in different ways, nothing, same message.

Quite a common issue with USB connections, and is a Windows problem rather than the camera - although for some reason, it does seem to appear with cameras more than anything else....

First thing to try is rebooting the PC with the camera unplugged, then plug it back in once the PC has started.

However, I suspect that you will then have to resort to going to Device Manager, remove the device in there (it will be somewhere under USB), unplug the camera then reboot the PC before plugging the camera back in once more.

Sony's software also caused me grief years back when I used it (Cyberlink?), and I resorted to doing everything through explorer if I remember correctly - not saying it is the problem, but it may be part of the problem.

Happy to offer remote help if you get stuck.

        Thanks FC.
I did try a restart but it didn't solve the problem.
I thought it might be a problem with the programme I downloaded so I've now uninstalled it and will reinstall it tomorrow, not got much hair left, so needed to stop for today.

It did at one point cross my mind it was a windows problem but hadn't got a clue how to fix it.

Still cant work out why it worked at first and then didn't work when I tried it again.

Another strange thing is that when doing my usual thing of not using camera software and instead just removing the SD card and putting it directly into my laptop it only shows up the still pictures, the video is not there, but I know the video is on the card because it plays back on the screen of the camera.

Are you using the Sony play memories program Pete ? thats what I use for viewing videos , I don't really take many videos but I am sure thats what I used last. for pictures I go more direct and open the files up in the SD card.

The USB drivers in Windows seem to be a bit cattywumpus at times and will go off and hide things for no apparent reason - the only way to get them back, usually, is to force a reinstall by removing/uninstalling the original.

The video not showing up is very odd - is it perhaps in a different folder on the SD card?

Try a different usb port on the PC.

On most digital cameras, you can specify how it connects to the PC - just scroll through and check the camera's own settings menu.

Most cameras can also operate as a webcam when connected so just make it is not trying to run in this mode - some cameras require you to amend the camera settings for usb connections or to press the playback button (as if to view pictures and video on the camera itself).

              @pete ,

I used to have the same problem with my Sony Cybershot,..likewise with a Canon then a Phone Camera,..each had software to allow images to go from camera to laptop but there was always problems so to eliminate all of their software i now use Faststone Image Viewer which is free.

One opens up Faststone Image Viewer,..then plugs in the camera,..when one hears the connection,..click on the camera image on top left of screen,..the window will open to allow you to download all the images into Faststone Image viewer.

Note you can delete the images off your camera after they have being imported.

Just looking at the link sent by @wiseowl , it states you cannot transfer files using a MTP connection.
Looking up MTP it appears to be the normal way windows transfers files.

Seems like a mine field of dead ends.

MTP - Media Transfer Protocol and yes that is the standard Windows way of working.

As it is a Sony, it could very well be the case that they have their own proprietary way of working (they are terribly guilty for stuff like that), and you will have to use their software, assuming of course that the software will run on your version of Windows

Just down loaded the Sony software again.
Still doesn't work, camera say its connecting and the Sony page is telling me to connect a camera.
Tried the add a devise bit on windows and it found the camera but said drivers are unavailable?
Does that mean its never going to work?

I can see the video via VLC player, but the quality is rubbish.
Are there any other video players that might give a better quality?

VLC is one of the best players going to be honest, I doubt any other player would make much difference.

To get the camera working, I do think you are going to have to go into Device Manager and delete the device and start again.
