How much did this little lot cost us?

I am sick and tired of hearing from the 'thou shalt not' brigade that I shouldn't have sugar in my tea, I shouldn't eat tasty food, I shouldn't enjoy a pint or four... because I and people like me are costing the NHS a fortune. Well, what about these eejits? Middle of winter, with the worst weather conditions for around a decade, and these pillocks decide to get themselves lost - then others have to risk their lives to save them , and we as taxpayers have to foot the bill!

I'd like to be that the cost of that little lot far and rapidly outweighs the cost of a spoon of sugar in your tea!

I'm more worried about their rescuers having to put their own lives at risk rather than the financial cost.:dunno::coffee::snorky:

Agreed - but this extends to all sorts of activities. We are continually being bomarded with propaganda that those of us who are a tad portly are all that is bad, and the whole cause of the NHS failing. Meantime, we have people getting free strapadicktome ops, eejits going up mountains in the depth of winter, and cyclists riding up the side of lorries...

Maybe the time has come to let natural selection take its course?

“Natural selection “? Wouldn’t that dictate that we leave the sick/homeless/less fortunate to fend for themselves? I think it’s a sign of ‘humanity’ when we apportion disproportionate resources to help those in need. Long may it continue...

No, it categorically wouldn't - they have no choice in their predicament, and therefore deserve every resource we can offer regardless of cost.

Surely though, I cannot be the only one to see that we are almost rewarding stupidity on a grand scale, whilst decrying people who have reasonably normal vices? Would you go and climb a mountain in Glencoe, in January, with 12 to 18 inches of snow on low ground and expect to not get into some sort of trouble?

If I were to remove a wall socket in my home, and start poking about with a screwdriver whilst the mains is on, I should expect to get a nasty shock - not rocket science, just sense. Why should these eejits be any different?

If they are not insured, then make them pay it back at a fiver a week for the rest of their days - why should you and I pay, when we are being cast as devils for having a cake?

I am all for humanity (more than you might believe), but why are we continually beating one section of society whilst another blows millions?

@Fat Controller I was raging about this very thing when i read about it on BBC Scotland a few hours ago. I suppose maybe because they had mobile phones? they thought it wouldn't be so bad if they got into difficulties. Not sure you'd get a signal near Glencoe tho! It's 1 thing getting caught in freak weather but I can vouch that over the last few days it has been REALLY cold here and Glencoe will be much worse. I think the people who needed rescuing should be made to pay at least some of the costs involved in their rescue which might make the bloody idiots think twice before doing anything so damned stupid again risking others lives in the process.

I think at the end of the day, ‘humans’ will be stupid, and there are lots of levels of stupidity. Indeed, I’m one of the stupidest people I know.

Lop the top off a finger whilst chopping wood.... break an arm whilst going to work in the snow.... fishing trawler gets hit with a freak wave and capsizes..... those are genuine accidents, and are precisely what our A&E service is for.

Climb a huge mountain, in Scotland, in the depth of winter whilst there is disruption due to snow and ice even at lower levels..... that is deliberate in my book, and they should pay back every penny of the recovery costs.

I freely admit that I am overweight, and I am truly grateful for the treatment I am currently receiving - BUT, over the years I have paid in a hell of a lot more (and continue to do so) than I am taking out of the system. Meanwhile, eejeit climbers/skiers/cyclists are lauded as being the paragons of health, yet they take out vast sums of money in one fell-swoop?

But the “system” isn’t fair, or equal, that’s how it works, in a civilised society.

So that is what needs to change?

Allegedly, we live in a democracy - yet, more often than not, we roll over when it comes to things that we know are unfair or wrong. Why? Surely that flies in the face of democracy?

Despite its many faults, I have quite a bit of faith in the system. Democracy is great, but it wasn’t that long ago that mob rule (democracy?) decided it was a good idea to burn witches. Yes, I’m being extreme, but you get my point? AFAIC, democracy doesn’t always get it right, one only has to look over the ocean to see how it can all go wrong. I’m quite proud, rightly or wrongly, that we live in a society that protects those less fortunate, and yes, the stupid. I’ve worked all my life, paid my ‘dues’, and claimed next to nothing, if anything. Do I begrudge it? No.
