Just got surveyed about this :yikes:

Resomation, or bio-cremation, is a process used in funerals as an alternative to cremation. Currently, resomation does not take place in the UK.

Resomation works by placing the body in a mixture of water and alkali inside a pressurised chamber. It is heated for three to four hours, reducing the body to a liquid solution and bones. As with traditional cremation, the bones can be broken down to ash and returned to the family in an urn.

Resomation produces around enough leftover liquid solution to fill the equivalent of a bathtub each time. This solution is drained into the sewage system. As with sewage, any remaining solid matter can be treated and either used as fertiliser on farms or disposed of at landfill sites. Any remaining liquid is also treated as with sewage and, after treatment, can become tap water.

Having heard a little more about resomation, to what extent do you support or oppose the introduction of resomation in the UK?

Well, unpleasant as the process itself sounds, it is no less pleasant than the alternatives really - and it seems that there could at least be a beneficial 'output' in terms of fertiliser.

The hard truth is that we are running out of space for all sorts of stuff that we need to dispose of, whilst also being on a razor edge when it comes to energy, AND have a number of environmental issues as well - we really do need to change our thinking, minimise what we do dispose of and re-use more.

The heat and the alkali will break most drugs down.
I won't be around so I won't mind what they do to the remains.
