I've had sparrows nesting under the edge of the tiles on my roof (where the tiles sit just above the guttering) for the last three years and they are driving me mad. Does anyone know of a product I can use to block this area off please?

    Hi Sheal,

yes there is a type of eaves carrier that has lots of plastic fingers designed to do just that. Its available from Travis Perkins although I can't remember its exact name.

You'll need to ease the bottom row of tiles to fit it though.

Does that really work, Ziggy. I had Starlings pulling out the concrete pieces under the eaves so that they could get inside. I know Sparrows ain't Starlings but if the Starlings follow they'll make mincemeat out of the plastic. Just a thought!

Thanks Ziggy, I don't think we have Travis Perkins on the island anymore, I'll check when I'm out and about to see if they are still here, if not I'm sure somebody else may have them.

I'd quite like to have sparrows nesting under my eaves. We had a family which did so for years, but sadly they haven't been back for the last few seasons.

I had this problem years ago and we filled the cavity they used with a type of spray-in foam type thing that set to a hard mass.
Clearly you couldn't use that in a large area but maybe for a small one ?

Good point Armandii, the plastic fingers are about an eighth wide & flexible. If they did bend them they would spring back into place. But that wouldn't stop a determined Starling with a Stanley knife.

Another sparrow lover here, I'll have a few as well if you like?? Actually it is nice to hear of them doing well, their numbers were depleting!! Sorry Sheal that doesn't really help but I just think they are such cute little birds.

I was amazed when I was working in Aphrodisias, the number of sparrows was fantastic. Turkey was in a financial meltdown at the time & no one was spraying the crops, instead the entire family, including the toddlers were out in the fields hand weeding.

The benefits to the wildlife were so obvious. Loads of butterflies too:thumbsup:

Well, my favourite Sparrow is Johnny Depp.

Thanks everyone, it's not so much the nesting as the blasted racket they make. It's like having a garden full of budgies. If I can block them out then they'll go and annoy someone else. Well, that's the theory anyway.

I don't seem to have a problem with starlings even though I get fifty to sixty of them sitting on the overhead cables that cross the edge of my garden from time to time.

Armandii.......Johnny Depp..........That's one sparrow I wouldn't mind nesting here. :heehee: Both my daughters met him a few years ago and spent a couple of hours chatting with him, got photo's too.

Put up sparrow/johnny depp sized nest boxes at the bottom of the garden Sheal, you could get either of them moving in and at least it would stop Pirates nesting in your roof space.

Sounds like a good idea Ziggy. The nest boxes wouldn't have to be to big, he's only tiny! :)

I'm glad to see that the Sparrows are on the up and up after the dramatic decline in their numbers, must be a cyclic thing. Every morning when I go into the garden the Lilac bush is full of Sparrows chattering away, it's pretty noisy so I see your point, Sheal.:D

The Starlings are the real breaking and entering guys around here. And their beaks are like Stanley knives, Ziggy!

When I saw Johny Depp playing Captain Jack Sparrow I thought it was genius!!:D:thumbsup:
