I remember a classroom chart depicting the planets ; how would it have been possible to explain to primary school kids that Neptune is five-times further away from Jupiter , than Jupiter is from us ???:yikes: and receives only 3% of the sunlight that the latter does .

Has anyone seen the short video on YouTube by Carl Sagan :-'Pale Blue Dot'?

Thanks for that Zigs ; has been a few years since I last watched that .
Would do good for some of these religious extremists to watch that ; Carl Sagan would have made a good world leader !

Interesting !.....to hold something that ancient in your hand:oopss:!!

They make the Archaean rock outcrops in N.W.Scotland look young ; at a mere 3000 million years old these are relatively juvenile !
How did you acquire them Zigs??

Best advice as mentioned, join your local Astronomical Society.
Also buy the monthly magazine Astronomy Now or Sky at Night.
Go to your library (when they open again) and check out the Science/Astronomy section.
Many of your questions will be answered there.

@ARMANDII I've just been outside and there's a huge ring around the moon. From the ground the ring looks about the size of a large circular field. I wonder if you can see it where you are?

Unfortunately not, Sheal. I've only managed to see the Moon once in the last fortnight due to heavy cloud.....and it's the same again tonight:doh::wallbanging::cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Ah, that's a shame. I took some photo's but my camera isn't strong enough and the ring didn't show. I've not seen anything like it before.

I've seen it a few times, Sheal, it just means that the atmosphere is full of moisture and is bending the light reflected from the Moon. I can sometimes get the same effect when viewing Stars and Galaxies........which is a pain as the atmosphere makes it difficult enough to see things clearly.

I've seen that kind of thing before, is it called a halo?
Mostly seen it on cold frosty winter nights.

Yes, it is, pete:thumbsup:. It's sometimes caused also by ice particles high in the atmosphere. You can also get the same effect causing strangely shaped rainbows in the sky sometimes called Sky Dragons or Glories.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:
