    Hi chums. Just looked at one of my climbing roses, and noticed a VERY red (no... purple) shoot coming from a bud. It looks very much like a sucker. I thought that suckers always came from the base, not so ?
    Cheers...freddy.

    Hi again. Thought I'd take a pic so you can see for yourself. The thing that strikes me also is the speed at which they appeared. There are 3 in all.
    Cheers...freddy.

    Nice healthy shoot there.
    Suckers tend to be pale green and have more leaflets

    Hi Freddy just as a double check I asked my friend Anna from the R.N.R.SOCIETY.

    Roses can have 5 or seven leaves that is perfectly normal,If its not growing as you want it to,you could bend it into the right position (Thats what I would do) or----it off ,I can,t bring myself to say the words
    :hehe::)

    Years 1, 2 and 3, simply train your climbing rose into a framework of horizontal main stems.
    Cut out the ones that are weak or surplus to requirements.

    Year 3 in mid-summer, after the new shoots have flowered, cut the stems back to within 3-4 in from the main frame branch. This will ensure that you get plenty of new shoots - which will then flower the next year.

    The old framework of branches will produce flowers for several years. However, it will be necessary to train some new shoots into new lateral framework branches. Treat these new laterals just the same as the older ones. Proper pruning and training of your climbing rose will ensure a succession of these new laterals.
