    I've just been out to watch the ISS go over. A cracking long view tonight that spanned the west to east skies.
    To the left, I pondered the moon. ITS ABSOLUTELY HUGE AT THE MOMENT.
    Is it normally this big on the 15th April ? I'm used to seeing a harvest moon that big but why is it like this now?

    I don't know if the moon usually looks big on 15 April but when it's near the horizon it does appear bigger than when it's higher in the sky. This is due to an optical illusion. Scientists still aren't sure how to explain this illusion and there are a few different theories about it.

    Maybe it has something to do with the blood moon eclipse? Perhaps @Kristen and @ARMANDII will be able to tell us. :)

      I watch the moon rising over a mountain, it`s fascinating how fast it actually moves. :SUNsmile:

        I seem to remember reading somewhere, that it moves one moon width in 8 minutes.

        And since the sun is the same size in the sky, it moves by the same amount.

        A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth. The technical name is the perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system. The term "supermoon" is not astronomical, but originated in modern astrology.The association of the Moon with both oceanic and crustal tides has led to claims that the supermoon phenomenon may be associated with increased risk of events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, but the evidence of such a link is widely held to be unconvincing.

        The most recent occurrence was on 30 January 2014. The next occurrence will be on 10 August 2014, which will be the closest encounter in 2014.

        The opposite phenomenon, an apogee-syzygy, has been called a micromoon, though this term is not as widespread as supermoon.

        Now we all know!!!:hapydancsmil::hapfeet::snork:
