Yesterday, OH and I decided to get away from the town for a bit and take a drive out to the countryside around Canterbury. By the standards of the South East, it is still pretty sleepy and remote. Entering a local hostelry remains a bit of an adventure. When you reach the entrance, the pub sign creaks ominously overhead, and bolts of lightning slice through the heavens as you cross the threshold into the Pit of Doom. Well, all right. It's not quite like that. But I was presented with a steak knife with which to eat my cheese sandwich, which seemed a little strange. Anyway, one village had one of those 'Deathsville Welcomes Careful Drivers' signs. Or, to be precise, it said:-

We were always told it was a result of Black Death, but this info seems to enhance the mystique.
