... I have mostly been depressed....
However I cheered up the day my family celebrated Christmas-29th December- as we indulged in a taste test of sloe gin from 2 sources, mine and my daughters'.
Her sloes were from a nature reserve, frozen not stabbed, made with white sugar and 4 almonds per bottle.
Mine were from the local park, stabbed, with brown organic sugar and only 2 almonds per bottle..
We both used Gordons dry gin; mine was a month older than hers.
Mine turned out much darker and more syrupy, hers was lighter and not so sweet. I don't think we're going to have any left to age!
    Anyone else tried various sources?

Hello, Liz, and Bom Ano Novo to you. Sorry to hear you had a bad year ... I didn't pick that up from you ... but I certainly wish you a wonderful new year. [IMG]

Pleased you had a nice time with your family. I have never made sloe gin but I have a recipe from a Dutch friend if you would like me to search it out. Hers was always excellent ... I saw "was" we knew each other in England and she is back in Holland and me here.

My Mother -out-law gets hers from trees around the village and the school playing fields. She gives the stuff as xmas presents..you have never tasted such a horrible, sweet, sticky red glue in all your life [IMG] Lord knows how she gets it in to that state.. [IMG]
And before you ask!..It's not just my bottle that's like it :D

Hi LOL, yes we'd love another recipe to try, thank you!
Paladin, ours is sweet but we also give it as presents and everyone asks for more next year- perhaps its an acquired taste.

Ours was made from sloes picked from the hedgerows next to our house, stabbed all over and made with white sugar, no almonds though which has intrigued me, might suggest we try that next year. I don't drink but beloved is knocking it back quite well, says it has a sharp tang to it!

Liz, I remember my friend's was sweet but very pleasant. She had a dreadful sweet tooth and I not so much. She collected her berries from the hedgerows in Bucks where we lived near the Oxon border.

I'll get back to you on this.
