I have a modern all singing, all dancing car and have managed to turn off most of the technology that it keeps bombarding me with :blue thumb:.

Apparently I can't turn off the two things that bug me the most.

When I start the car the display keeps telling me I haven't linked my mobile to the car (or vice versa) - not too much of a nuisance.

The one that is a nuisance is the collision warning. It screams at me and flashes a big red car on the screen when it thinks I may hit another vehicle. It does this sometimes for vehicles parked in lay-byes and for parked cars on narrow roads. It's not a smart car - it's an idiot!

It also tells me that I need a rest! This happens if I go over the centre line on the road too often - which is inevitable on our narrow winding country roads where you can't help but get the car wheels touching the line some of the time. The other problem with the same cause is that it tries to pull the car back to the left when I touch the line and would end up in the ditch if I let it :mute:

Is it a Volvo @shiney ? I have one too and find you can switch off most things in the Car Functions menu. Annoyingly each time mine goes in for a service they do a software update which seems to re-enable things I don't want and disable things I do want. It takes me ages to find where the settings are again. The most annoying thing for me is that some of the dash buttons don't illuminate at night, so I can't easily see the one that flips open the fuel filler. I took it back for them to re-enable it. After the last service the light on the button has been switched off again and I didn't check when I picked it up. I rang them and this feature is only switchable by the main dealer as Jiffy says they connect a computer to the car. Modern cars are too clever for their own good.

Hi @JWK Yes, an S90. I really like the car but have one real gripe - the positioning of the wing mirrors obstructs the view when going out of the driveway.

Sounds like a complete nightmare, I really hate cars that think they know better than you.
If you have a crash the bloody thing won't take responsibility, you will have to.
And there will probably be a very annoying voice saying, "I told you so ".
Talk about in built back seat drivers.

Had a new lorry with all tec on it, trottle would cut out on a it, then the thing would just stop (ie run for 5 minutes then stop then run again) The trottle they couldn't find a problem, but when it did happern i would turn the key off then back on 3 times and it would run again :love30:

The running for 5 minutes then stop the computer couldn't find a problem, they could change anything they wanted to even make the engine run on 5 pots not 6, the lorry had just had a servive so i started to look at things been done in the service, it was down to that the fuel filter was crossed threaded, who found that, ME, not the computer:biggrin::thumbsup:

              Edit
Also the doors would lock by them self's and if you are outside and the keys are inside you'm stuffed as i and some other drivers found out

Last year my son's father-in-law was 'rear ended' by another driver. The driver got out of the car and said it wasn't my fault the car didn't tell me I was going to crash! :doh:Are some people really that stupid? And who would be at fault, the driver or the car's manufacturer?

Well I think this is going to be a big problem in the future.
Self driving cars will be on the roads causing chaos, and when it all goes wrong it will be the drivers fault for not watching what the thing was doing, but the driver will be lulled into a false sense of security.

I can imagine it will be great fun cutting them up and watching them slam on the brakes to keep the social distance.

We have just downsized to one car that Mrs H can drive. So the Mini convertible has gone to her daughter and the Mitsubishi was swapped for a Mazda CX3 automatic. Love the auto 6 gears, not driven one since the old 3 gear autos which were horrible. This has auto engine stop which saves petrol at lights and junctions, possibly up to 2 pints a decade. It is unnerving turning right at a busy junction thinking the b**gger won't start. There will be a micro switch I can bridge out somewhere to neutralise it, the mighty Youtube will show me how :blue thumb:

Sorry Harry, I don't like the auto engine stop. I don't and won't own one, I find them distracting and annoying when sitting alongside them at traffic lights etc. It may save petrol but I wonder how long the starter will last?

Hi Sheal, I don't like the system as well. I want to disconnect it if I can.
Amazingly they don't use the starter motor. It stops the engine in the optimum position and restarts with fuel injection into a cylinder. Bloomin clever aren't they!

Mrs Shiney's car stopped doing it all by itself. Apparently, as she doesn't drive the car much, the auto start doesn't work unless the battery is almost fully charged. Her journeys are usually not much more than five miles so the car has decided that the charge in the battery is insufficient.

My car has it and uses it very well - except it tends to restart occasionally whilst I'm still sitting in traffic. It tends to occur mainly when I'm stuck at the level crossing, down the road, and I think it may be saying that it's about time we got moving again.

                            Pennies versus pounds

I am an avid car lover and have a few myself of various types.

The saving on fuel with a stop start motor is far out weighed by the cost of replacement starter motors and replacement batteries and the labour charges incurred over a protracted period of time.

It is a gimmick to make the public think they need it to save money, I find it worrying when I stop and the engine cuts out with thoughts of ‘will the engine start again when I need to pull away’.

If you don’t want one fitted to the car its too late, you have already paid for it in the purchase price.

Vehicles are sometimes over engineered in certain ways but are lacking in other areas.

I would swap my stop start for a good covert car maker installed 360* camera so that I have footage of anyone damaging my car, my pet hate as I have had a lot of it.
