    Hi!
I received a native cherry tree as a bare root in 2023. I decided it was too big and my in-laws said they would have it. They since decided to give it back but once I got it home, I realised they'd cut the leader stem. It's about 5ft tall. This Spring, its got lots of leaves all the way down the trunk and its looking happy enough. I have a tiny garden (6m x 4m) and i dont want anything in pots so I'm wondering if it can go in the ground without becoming massive and without developing a huge root system? I would love to keep it as it has some sentimental value. But I have no idea what the future will look like for this tree now and can't find any info online. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Wild cherries get pretty big in my experience, its basically a woodland tree.

Hiya yes they apparently get to 30m which is obviously way too big for my small patch. I'm wondering how that growth would be impacted by it being topped out, whether having the top clipped would impact the final size?

Doubt it, unless you did it every other year.
It will want to grow, so unless you are determined it will get ahead of you.

I grow a few large trees that I cut back every other year quite drastically, but not Cherry, so not sure how that responds to cutback.
