I was over at our friends today and they want to know what this tree is. I think it is an Acacia but have never seen the pods of one. They were away in England when it bloomed so don't know what the blooms look like.

I have lots of the pods ...

    Thank you in advance.

    I agree dendy [IMG] :D
But it looks like one of the small cultivars presumably thornless as well.
Just had a thought gleditsia is deciduous, was the pic taken today LOL?

Yes, it was, pete, about 4 o'clock, and although these friends only live 5 minutes away (in the car, 15 on the bikes) we have only gone down to 4oC and they have gone down to zero. Look at their location ... very open.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say it is Acacia Leucocephala, I have two at work in flower (and have been since august) with seed pods. this is the one we were discussing earlier last year. Remember this pic, I think this is the same tree as yours LoL.

This was before xmas and it was /is too cold for the pods to ripen and turn black as in your photo.

Looks like the same to me, strongy. Theirs looks a bit limp because of the zero temps.

Acacias run rife here. My friend actually thinks it's just a wild seedling because he didn't plant it. He knows nada about gardening and I (ha, ha) am his mentor and have to tromp around his hectare and examine and identify whatever is there. Also, he gets cuttings, rootings, anything I don't want and says his garden will soon look like LoLs (well, not quite what he says [IMG]

I'll check up on this tomorrow and, as I've said, I have a pile of pods if anyone is interested.

    Anyone need seeds?

If I knew you were THAT desperate Pete, I would have brought a bag of seed back from Turkey along with the Bauhinias. :D It was growing in nearly every hotel garden there, full of seed pods. I don't think mine will ripen now but I'll wait and see. In Cyprus it was growing out of the pavements and walls just like Buddleia so it could be thought of as a weed.
BTW the acacia seeds I sent you are Acacia Karoo which may be hardy, I have 5 up now plus 12 Albizia Summer Chocolate [IMG]

Sorry dendy, maybe I was a bit too hasty, and you never get nowhere if your too hasty. :D :D

    Thats great LOL thanks. [IMG]

Strongy, I've not sown mine yet, I'm waiting for better light.
So the acacia is a S. African with spines up to 3 inches. Nice. :D
I wish we had weeds like your Leucocephala instead of dandelions
