I have bought a small containerised Katsura Tree (multistemmed) which I plan to plant in a long established lawn area. Much of my underlying soil is clay. Having done a bit of research I understand that Katsuras do not like compacted soil. Am I setting myself up for disappointment and if so is there anything I can do to help the matter?

I haven't any experience of this tree, but all the information I found says it doesn't mind what soil it has; apparently it does like to be kept moist. So I would dig it a good deep hole and maybe put a bit of gravel at the bottom to improve drainage until it settles itself. Some sources say it produces better Autumn colours in an acid soil, so you could try mixing the soil with ericacious compost, or if you have your own use that. From what I've read it sounds as if it will just be smaller in imperfect condtions, which is a good thing because it can grow enormous!
It sounds worth growing, good luck. [IMG]

Thanks for the advice and links. I must say having read more and more about it, it is a tree I would love to plant but I am concerned about inflicting an enormous shady tree on future owners of my garden. I already have a very large Wellingtonia which does cause considerable shade!
