We saw this while on holiday in Turkey this month and have no idea what it is. We only saw it in peoples gardens, never in the wild, and the leaves grow up to about 20 cm across.

Does anyone have any idea, also if it blooms, we only ever saw leaves.

Hi, Sis. As I've said, I think it is an Aroid of some sort (your ZZ plant is an Aroid) as are Alocasias/Colocasias.

I say this because I've seen what I think is similar in Alte ... the plant nearest me clambering down to the riverlet. I at first thought it was a huge-leafed Nasturtium but on trawling around, found a picture ... and now I can't find it again.

Maybe this will jog an expert's memory. [IMG]

Why, "amazingly still alive", you must be getting pretty good at growing from seed by now. [IMG]
I've not come across anything with that leaf shape other than bauhinia, but I could be wrong.
Maybe if it was a cut down tree it might send up vigourous shoots from the base with very large leaves.
    Its just a thought. [IMG]
I think Strongy calls it a camels foot leaf.

:D :D :D ... don't I wish. I am just barely keeping seedlings alive as I have no greenhouse and things have to live on the wall under the Jacaranda ... or as now where I've moved them into the outside living room on the South facing windowsill where they may fry in the daytime and freeze at night. There is no temperature control.

strongy ... where are you? And Sis, is this a tree?

LoL, you need some kind of propagation area, in total shade perhaps, with a heating cable for cold nights.
I know it sounds daft in your climate, but we all have our problems to overcome when it comes to seedlings, which need very stable conditions until they become established.

Kedi, you now need to work out which one it is, there are quite a few. [IMG]

I always forget something! Like this time I didn't look if it was a vine, shrub or tree.

At least I have a general ID now - thanks! and I'm sure I'll remember the name, especially the camels foot one, I like that!

I love plantzafrica, Sis, one of my "favourites". But, if you don't know if it was a vine, shrub or tree ???????

I agree with pete and the leaf but, until you can remember what characteristics it had ... and I still don't know this double flower. :(

Sis, have you seen in the ID section the incredible trees in Lagoa ... even my Stu doesn't know. :D

Kedi, I think it is Bauhinia Purpurea exactly the same as the plants I have from the seed I picked up in Fethiye public gardens in Turkey last summer.
There were some large trees growing on the promenade at Olu Deniz, as well as in gardens.

Thanks strongy. I took this pic in Kemer, so not too far from Ã?â??lÃ?¼deniz. I googled and what beautiful flowers and colours. Looking forward to seeing a pic of yours. I wonder how long it will take to bloom? They appear to be fast growers.

Sis, there was a wall around the garden with this iron fence on top and these leaves pushing through the fence. I'll make an effort to take note of more points in future. I did think to take a photo of the trunk of the maple rose this time, not only the leaves and flowers.

Evening strongy. With both I have nicked the seeds, soaked in water and then planted nice and plumplike ... to be honest. I've had two attempts at Chilopsis with no success and have just a half dozen seeds left now.

I think it's lack of proper propagation, if you know what I mean. :rolleyes; I really just have to take my chances in the heat.

Waco sent me a load of unknown seeds from Greece of a shrub with red and white flowers (she's about as clever as Sis describing things :D ) and two have germinated but have come to a grinding halt ... like the Sesbania, Delonix and an unknown climbing plant from mira.

Somehow I don't think I'll go into your line of work. [IMG]
