This vine suddenly appeared in a large pot with a lime tree on the kitchen patio last week. It is growing very fast ... the leaves are soft, heart-shaped and about 20cm x 20cm.

At first I thought it was the White Bryony but it's the wrong time of the year and wrong shaped leaf.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure "vine" is the right word either Victoria,:)

It looks slightly Hibiscus like to me.

I think Paulownia would be slightly hairy and have a velvet feel to the stem?

    Hello SS and pete.

I said 'vine' as it suddenly shot up out of the blue (or compost to be precise). I would count out Hibiscus as I have many of those and the leaves are not quite right for the Newbiscus which hasn't seeded yet this year and is about as far away from this as possible (around the other side of the house). Could it be Catalpa?

I have e-mailed our friend who gave us the lime tree as he had just removed it from a garden he was re-landscaping and asked if the people have either tree.

    The mystery continues ...

I repotted this interloper a week ago and it promptly lost all it's leaves but two then within a couple of days had produced new large leaves ... and a cluster of flowerbuds ...

    ... any more guesses ... ???

PS Sorry for the blurred pic but it's windy ...

Thank you so much for that Silver surfer ... I'm sure the flower was more useful for identification. It has also been identified as the Abutilon theophrasti on another forum.

It's a shame it's just an annual and still a mystery how it came to me. I have never seen such here before but I note in reading about it that it can often be found in cornfields ... strangely there are two small cornfields about 1km from me in between the orange orchards so perhaps a little bird gave me a gift!

I have a Brachychiton acerifolius that needs a larger pot so I will leave the Abutilon for a month or so to see how it develops then replace it with the Brachychiton.
