weeds or not weeds

HI,
I am new here and to gardening really. I hope to learn more . I have recently bought a house and the gardens have been somewhat neglected for a number of years and are very overgrown. I have been trying to tackle this but don't really know what I am doing. The back garden is the least overgrown so I have been concentrating on that. I have cleared away the dead, rotting overgrowth but I'm not sure if the plants I found underneath are weeds or not. I looked at some images of common weeds, but couldn't find anything that looks similar to what's growing in the garden. Could anyone suggest something please as regards identification?

There's a plant identification forum on here - if you post pics of the plants then no doubt someone will be able to tell you what they are
