I thought we were the only ones that had a very strange 'over build' on the outskirts of our village but it seems not so.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/surrey/6432575.stm

Our infamous 'overbuild' started life as a humble little bungalow ten years or so ago the owners decided they wanted to build a house but instead of knocking the bungalow down they built over it!

It's quite an impressive house and although the outside of the house is finished the inside is far from done as the complete bungalow still rests inside and the owners are still living in it and no more work has been done for years now.

I wish I could take a photo of it for you all to see but I don't want to be caught being a stalker!

Its crazy, these people are just building somewhere to live on their own land, as far as is possible to see they a worrying on-one else.
A developer wants to throw up a shoddy overbearing block of flats, (yes flats, not appartments)and he gets the go ahead.

I suppose if the people concerned were gypsies it would be OK.

The castle is indeed a beautiful site to see but one does wonder about the guy I mean it does sound as if he wanted to make a commercial site with the go-kart track thing.

The straw house is another matter I mean how could the council object in the first place! They are always telling us that we must recycle thank goodness that government inspector over turned the council.

Pete there does indeed seem to be something wrong with council's consent.
Just outside our village there is a large house that started life as a static caravan on a small holding, over the last few years they have got planning permisson to have large lakes made and it now is a very busy commercial site.

The owners have not been there 10 years and they have already put the whole lot up for sale it seems as if they only intended to make a quick buck and get round the laws, I think they should have been made to stay at least 20 years before they moved on!

The Straw house lady has been battling Mendip council for years..
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/somerset/closer_to_you/2003/09/straw_house.shtml

Personally, I think if you can live like that on your own land & you are not obstructing views etc, I see no reason why not....! Good for these people I say..

 I think all councils want something...!! Whether funny handshakes or back handers.... If you know the right person etc... We had that here about 20yrs ago & they built 400 homes....! Fantastically the council people got found out & were sent away in a black cloud, but nobody was made to tear anything they had approved down, so it is obviously still going on...!! You scratch my back & I'll scratch yours...!!!!! ;) Planners & councilors are a different kind of breed of people I think.. :(
